I don't need an excuse to get
out of going to John's and his brothers' birthday, as
I'm not friends with Virginia anymore. We had an argument. We
were talking about this and that over
a cup of coffee, and then things hit a sour note.
She accused me of
being in league with the Catholics, even
the more fundamentalist ones among them! I didn't deny
it. I must admit that I'd started to have doubts.
“So,
do you really think they'll let you have doubts? Your
intelligence and your will have got to serve the
church, you've got to obey just like
children obey their parents!"
-
Yeah, but I
don't see how it can hurt.
She
was furious. ”If you
convert, then we can't
be friends anymore. How could you hang out
with a heretic like Miss Thomson, and me,
hand out with a fanatic like you?”
I was gutted. She called
me a fanatic because I believe in
the Immaculate Conception and the Resurrection. How she could even
question the divinity of Christ?! What makes her any
different from an atheist? She shrugged her shoulders. I
wasn't her friend anymore - she'd lost
all interest in me.
I tried to put on a brave face in front of
Miss Thomson,
who must have heard our raised voices. She made
me a cup of tea and offered to read
my cards. It's true that she does come across as
bit of a witch. She kept saying, "You poor
little thing". Fortunately, she said my mother was watching over
me. Even so, I'm going to have to watch
my step - I feel threatened.
Could anything worse happen to me than falling out
with my best friend?!
